Hey everyone, technically I joined some time ago, but for one reason or another have been unable to get access to a computer.
I also seemed to lose track of the series, but have recently started rereading the series and I can feel the old Valdemaren fire coming back. I attribute this rekindling to the new Collegium books and I was wondering what all of you thought of them. To me they seem great and uplifting, but then at others they spiral in a kind of dark depressing theme.
I like them, how about you?

What I have read so far I like. Though I haven't gotten the newest one just yet. But it does seem like Misty's exploring more than the light good side of Haven too, and I think that's good thing, for both the writer and the readers. Not everything can have nothing but happy endings.

The new one is great, I got it the day I got the notice that it was out which is surprising to say the lest for where I live at. Read it and couldn't put it down, but I should warn people it does have a tear jerker in it. But I will not spoil it for other saying what it is.

I've been after the second book. I HAD the money, but the book itself didn't show up in the store for nearly a month after it's been released. *sigh* I like the series.

Wait till you get to the end. I finished it last night and I liked it quite a bit. Again with the realism, I was very happy and am intended to incorporate a couple things that are background-ish to Valdemar that we didn't know previously into HoV We will now have both football(soccer) and Kirball as options for sports in Valdemar. Kirball being the one that will most likely come into play. But first I'll have to go back and pull all the pertinent info out of the book and put it into some sort of Rule thread format so those who haven't read the book can still participate If I don't have to work I'll do that later today.

You were right, Bri. Less disappointing now that the I've read its good ending. But the writing 'quality' is worse then that of Arrows.... It's way too basic and stinks of her 500 hundred Kingdoms series, which kinda sucks....

Forgive this bit of a rant, you are forewarned though, so skip it if you don't like mild rants And please please do not take this as an attack on anyone. This is my perspective and hopefully it'll help others who read it to understand a bit more from another persepctive. Given the volume of work that Misty is expected to crank out these days, she has at least 4 books released in 2010, I'm not suprised or upset by simpler books. This particular series I feel is more about giving folks some of the 'inbetween' stories that they wanted so badly. It's nice for the aspects of Collegium life we get, without being too heady with the hard plotlines. I like the break from constant Valdemar or Velgarth-wide crisis, there is still plenty of drama, but it's more personal and real. It's not a bad 'quality' of writing, it's a slightly different style. One that I think is a very nice change. I had a similar thing happen with another one of my authors and I think it helps show how the author grows, that they don't have to be 'constant non-stop trouble after trouble' authors to produce and sell books. Is this series her best? No. Is it a good series? Most certainly. Misty had initially told the fans that after Albreich's set she was not looking to write in Valdemar for at least a few years. And she didn't take near as long a break from it as I feared she would. This I'm sure is largely due to fan demand. But if you aren't having those uber big ideas, or don't have the time to devote to them and still meet your other obligations, but you want to keep your fans happy as an author, what can you do? You do exactly what she has done, you write good but simpler pieces that fill in non-critical but important aspects of the world. Did she have to do this series? Not at all. Could she just have short storied us to death in the anthologies? Sure she could have. But she didn't, she chose to give us good, sturdy (if on the smaller and less dramatic side) books, that help us fan fictions folks fill in the peices as she would have seen everyday life. Now as a very long time RP'er (over ten years), who has seen and/or tried nearly every scenario there is in 3 different authors worlds, plus some of my own creation, it is very hard to keep coming up with new ideas. Something that someone else hasn't already done, or a dozen someones hasn't done a hundred different ways. This is part of my current problem with HoV, trying to do new stuff, but without being nothing but a drama group. This is why we have our plot thread where folks can suggest and discuss plots. So that when myself and other others mods run out of ideas there is more to pool from. Book authors don't have that so much cause they can't co-author all thier works. So just a couple things to keep in mind, and maybe spur you all to input more ideas, we'd love to hear them. I promise we don't dismiss anything but the really implausible out of hand. And I doubt this group would ever offer something so implausible as to have that happen

That she does, but this is her living and generally writers keep thier main signed deals to a manageable level, it's the ones aimed at pleasing the fan-base that tend to be overwhelming to the writer or not as in depth as many would wish. Keep in mind there are plenty out there who wish she (and others) would produce much more on a yearly basis. Misty produces more than many, but there is a price to pay. I have one author I love that I only get one new book out of him a year. Now he writes more then the one series, but I don't follow the other ones. So I wish I could get more, but I understand he's committed to other sets, and the one series I love would not be as good if he rushed them and tried to fit more in. So I'm content. Sometimes you just have to find that happy medium and have a couple other good authors that produce at varying times of the year so you always have a ready supply of something new
